Primary Education is like the fertile soil, which is very much essential for a plant to grow.  Similarly, for a child to prosper in life, Primary Education should have quality.  To strengthen primary education, 2 blocks are allotted to each lecturer of DIET, covering all the 22 blocks.  The lecturers visit the Low Performing Schools on a regular basis and give Onsite Support in improving the Achievement Level of the students.
Name of the Lecturer                :       C. Lakshmi
Name of the School Visited      :       Mannar Naidu Aided Primary School,
                                                          Kaveripakkam
Date of Visit                             :       27th January 2015
Teachers present on that day   :       1 Headmaster and 1 Teacher
No. of students                :       Roll : 04  Present : 03 in V Standard

Focus Area:
The students were tested in the Basic Skills, Reading and Writing in languages and Numerical Ability in Mathematics on the four basic operations – Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.
Observation:
It is found that one student, ‘Mageshwaran’, when asked to identify a capital letter, he could not identify, even though he can recite and write all the alphabet from A to Z.
Teacher’s View:
The teacher reasoned that the student is playful and does not concentrate and does not do the homework given to him. So he is not in a position to identify the alphabet properly.
Observer’s Perception:
The reasons given by the teacher, namely, ‘playful’ and ‘not doing homework’ do not match with the problem.  So she felt that due care is not taken by the teacher in this regard.  Lecturer asked the teacher about the earlier attempts made by the teacher to rectify this problem.  The teacher could not give any information about the earlier attempts.  So the observer asked the teacher to reteach the same again, with a condition that the observer will review this issue on next week.
Measures Taken:
It was suggested that the teacher should teach the student the capital alphabet and make him identify the alphabet when given in a random manner.  One week was allotted to train the students.
Follow up in Second Visit:
The lecturer visited the school for the second time on 3rd Feb 2015.  On testing, it was found that, the student can identify the alphabet, when given in random manner.  When the student was asked to write the lower case of the English alphabet, he could not write.  Another one week time is allotted to train the student on writing the lower case alphabet.
Output:
On periodical monitoring and on giving ideas to rectify the problems, it was found that there is significant academic improvement.
Measures to sustain:
The lecturer has suggested to the teacher, that the student should be made to write at least five lines in four lines handwriting note book daily.
Implication:
This study clearly evidences that continuous periodical monitoring with proper instructions will improve the learning levels of the students.  Constant Academic visits to schools will enhance Quality in the system.
Feedback:
Number of School visits focusing on Academic improvement are to be encouraged.
Suggestions:
